Bedford is our closest town. It's about 4 miles from Bromham and is situated on the River Great Ouse. A historical John Bunyan is a well-known Bedfordian who was a preacher at Independent congregations (a Dissenter) and suffered persecution for his actions. He was born in 1628 in the parish of Elstow, just south of Bedford; the son of a tinker. Although the family was poor, they owned a cottage nearby, in the hamlet of Harrowden. On 18 February 1678 Bunyan published the first part of The Pilgrim's Progress. During the last ten years of his life he wrote a further 40 books including The Life and Death of Mr Badman (1680), The Holy War (1682) and The Pilgrim's Progress - Second Part (1685). He spent a lot of his life in prison because of his religious beliefs. He died in 1688. This statue of him stands at the top of the high street.
The River Ouse runs through the heart of Bedford. This is a picture of the embankment. A beautiful spot for a walk - at anytime of the year.
This is one of the newer landmarks in Bedford - the Butterfly Bridge. Opened in June 1998 by Prince Charles, it is an interesting structure and design for a simple footbridge. More information can be found here. Another structure of interesting design is the Oasis Leisure Complex. There are three swimming pools in the Bedford area, but this one is the only one fitted with wave machines and simulated beaches. Robinson Pool has recently been refurbished and is a more traditional type of facility. |
