Bromham Village is situated on the North bank of the River Great Ouse, 4 miles West of Bedford Town in the East of England. It has a population of about 5,000 [Map] A timeline for the village's history, starting with a mention in the Domesday Survey of 1086, can be found on the Bedfordshire Libraries website. We have lived here since 1992 and love the village atmosphere. To find out more, visit the village website (where you'll see pictures just like mine - well they are mine!! Don't know how they got on the village website!!!)
The Water Mill — this is still operational, but more as a tourist & educational facility. There has been a mill here since before the domesday survey in 1086. For centuries, the enormous wheel was turned only by the water of The River Great Ouse. In the 1920's a steam engine was installed to provide extra power, but by then, Water Mill technology had become obsolete. It has since been renovated and visitors can once again watch flour milling at close quarters.
St. Owen's is one of the churches in Bromham and is part of the St. Albans Diocese. It has a long history (which can be read here). An account of the church written in 1898 is here. It is situated in Bromham Park; a favourite walking spot for villagers and dog owners (including us!).
Very useful for those "forgotten items" or last minute meals!
The Swan pub is our local. We can't claim to be regulars but we have been there a few times over the years. It is a cosy, quaint pub, which has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Refurbished in 2005, this old Coaching Inn has been licensed since 1798 and there used to be a toll gate situated just down the road. During the winter months two log burning fires are lit. It is run by James & Jackie Kelly.
